A mixture that will tolerate some shade and the poorer soil conditions
found under trees. When sowing a lawn under these conditions, care should be taken to provide some fertiliser prior to sowing which will help the emerging seedlings establish. The use of phosphate and potash are more important than large amounts of nitrogen, so pick a fertiliser accordingly. At this early stage, the roots are more important than the aerial part of the plant. Dressing with a complete fertiliser can take place at a later stage.
Two important points to remember with shady areas --Always adjust your mower so that the grass is longer in shady area. --Do not forget to give it some extra feeds throughout the year. The plants causing the shade will take the majority of available food long before the grass has a chance to. The longer grass leaves will help with photosynthesis, the process by which the plant produces food for itself.
